“Sal del túnel. No consumas tu futuro”

Since 2015 WALCE is promoting “GO OUT OF THE TUNNEL. DON’T BURN AWAY YOUR FUTURE.”, a campaign focused on primary prevention, smoking cessation and lung cancer awareness, addressed to general public, media and political institutions. The program consists on a structure shaped as a giant cigarette committing pulmonologists and oncologists for performing counseling, displaying educational materials on smoking cessation and providing a basic spirometry test to people attending.

The Tunnel interior is divided into different areas:

• an area dedicated to primary prevention where people may consult and find info-educational booklets and brochures realized by WALCE over the years;
• a medical area where people can do a spirometry test for free, performed by a Pulmonologist, and receive the result, dealing directly with the physician.

In Italy the program has been organized as a roadshow and, during 2015 and 2016 (from the period of the World No-Tobacco Day, in May, until November, Lung Cancer Awareness Month) has toured 7 major Italian cities (Turin, Bari, Milan, Padua, Lecce, Messina and Rome).

In 2017, a third edition of this campaign took place; this time, both at Italian and European level: in Spring, on the 30th-31st May, a 2-day exhibition was organized in Place de la Monnaie in Brussels (as result, 450 spirometries have been performed and 600 people of any age, mainly smokers, joined the Tunnel asking information regarding smoke-related diseases and smoking cessation programs. The campaign catched the attention of local television broadcaster and journalists, as well.); in Autumn 2017, the initiative was successfully held in 3 different Italian cities (Palermo, Turin and Ravenna). The fourth edition, in November 2018, took place in Rome and Bari.

Over 15,000 people visited the Tunnel, involving groups of heterogeneous age: young people, adults and the elderly; more than 3,500 spirometries have been made. In addition, the former Italian Minister of Health, Hon. Beatrice Lorenzin, attended at the event in Rome, in 2015.

In 2019 WALCE is promoting, in cooperation with 2 major spanish organizations, Fundación MÁS QUE IDEAS and AEACaP-Asociación Española del Cáncer de Pulmón, and endorsed by The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), The Lung Ambition Alliance and Fondazione Insieme contro il Cancro, a “GO OUT OF THE TUNNEL” event focused on primary prevention and awareness on lung cancer, on the occasion of the 20th World Conference on Lung Cancer – WCLC 2019, that will take place in Barcelona, Spain. The 2-day exhibition of the Tunnel will be arranged during that weekend (September 7/8, 2019 – Opening Time: 11 am-8 pm, free entry) in one of the city’s major square, Plaça de la Universitat.

On the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day 2017, Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe (WALCE), in partnership with European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP), European Lung Foundation (ELF), European Respiratory Society (ERS), Insieme contro il Cancro and Associazione Italiana Pneumologi Ospedalieri (AIPO), is promoting a double event in Brussels focused on SMOKING CESSATION.

On 30 & 31 May there will be a two day exhibition, in Place de la Monnaie, entitled “Go out of the Tunnel. Don’t burn away your future”. This program consists on a structure shaped as a giant cigarette committing pulmonologists for performing counseling, displaying educational materials on smoking cessation and providing a basic spirometry test to people.

In concomitance with the exhibition of the Tunnel, on 31st of May at the EU Parliament in Brussels, it will be organized a high-level event entitled “WHO FCTC Article 14 – Time to prioritise tobacco cessation and dependence treatment.”, hosted by Italian MEP Alberto Cirio and focused on WHO FCTC Article 14. The aim of this session is to provide delegates with valuable information and good practice in order to advocate for the implementation of FCTC art.14 at national level.

Today more than ever, we know that our health is firstly and foremost related with food and the natural way of cooking comes from the awareness of this fact. A cookery designed to be brighter, more updated, not only focused on very nice things but consciously pursuing an ideal of health, is an art which currently plays a key role in the primary prevention of the modern diseases.
Considering these issues, WALCE decided to promote these classes to enable the participants to get a quick and funny updating on this topic.
The program of these meetings provides useful tips for those who want to follow a balanced diet which suits their needs. The practical cookery lessons include examples of good dishes that at the same time respect the nutritional recommendations. They are examples to demonstrate how the food can help to keep a good health.

The teacher of this course is the Chef Giovanni Allegro, specialized in natural cooking

Proviamo a vederci chiaro nei discorsi fumosi

Campagna di informazione e sensibilizzazione sulla prevenzione del fumo e sui corretti stili di vita, rivolta alle scuole primarie (classi IV e V) e alle classi I della scuola secondaria di 1° grado.

I dati epidemiologici riportano un costante aumento del numero di giovanissimi che si avvicinano al fumo di sigaretta. In Italia la percentuale di giovani che inizia a fumare prima dei 15 anni è pari al 18% e i ragazzi tra i 15 e i 17 anni che fumano sono il 38%. L’associazione WALCE Onlus (Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe – Donne insieme contro il tumore al polmone), in collaborazione con Carthusia Edizioni, ha dato vita al progetto “Questa non me la fumo – proviamo a vederci chiaro nei discorsi fumosi”, una campagna di informazione e sensibilizzazione sui danni causati dal fumo e sui corretti stili di vita, rivolta ai bambini delle classi IV e V della scuola primaria e ai ragazzi delle classi I della scuola secondaria di 1° grado.

Identità, salute, alimentazione e relazioni positive sono tutti aspetti che, se ben calibrati, conducono a un benessere emotivo e uno stile di vita sano, di cui il fumo è innegabilmente un nemico.

La Campagna è stata realizzata grazie al prezioso contributo di Autostrade per l’Italia e con il patrocinio del Comune e della Provincia di Torino, della Provincia di Asti e della Provincia di Cuneo, della Regione Piemonte, dell’Ufficio Scolastico Regionale, dell’stituto Superiore di Sanità.

La Campagna, presentata martedì 17 maggio 2011 al Circolo dei Lettori di Torino (in via Bogino 9, alle ore 11.30), è nata con l’intento di aiutare i bambini a orientarsi nel mondo in cui vivono, al fine di conoscere e affrontare uno dei problemi più attuali: il fumo di sigaretta.

Contrastare il fumo, ostacolo ben chiaro e definito carico di tante valenze metaforiche, sarà lo spunto per affrontare molti argomenti vicini ai ragazzini e collegati allo loro quotidianità: la Campagna tratta il problema in modo delicato, tenendo conto della sensibilità di ogni bambino, senza creare paure e allarmismi, proponendo l’immagine di uno stile di vita sano, fatto di identità personale, salute, buona alimentazione e relazioni positive.

“Abbiamo scelto di rivolgerci alle classi degli ultimi due anni della scuola primaria – ricorda la Prof.ssa Silvia Novello, presidente di WALCE Onlus – perché pensiamo sia importante attuare interventi di prevenzione e informazione sul fumo di sigaretta, rivolgendoci a soggetti in età evolutiva, ossia in una fase in cui l’apprendimento è particolarmente rapido e immediato e in cui si fissano comportamenti e modalità di approccio  a varie problematiche, che poi permangono anche nell’età adulta”.

Per quanto concerne il fumo, la scuola rappresenta un ambiente strategico indispensabile per trasmettere con i suoi modelli educativi e i suoi messaggi volti alla promozione della salute e alla scelta di stili di vita sani.

“Questa non me la fumo” appartiene alla collana Apriscatola ideata da Carthusia Edizioni (casa editrice specializzata in editoria per ragazzi e progetti di comunicazione rivolti alle scuole) ed è formato da una scatola-contenitore che, una volta aperta, si trasforma nella plancia di un gioco per la classe. Un vero e proprio Kit didattico formato da un grande libro per la classe, 24 taccuini, uno per ogni bambino, carte e segnalini per giocare e una guida rivolta agli insegnanti.

Il testo della storia, scritto da Sabina Colloredo, affermata autrice per ragazzi, è composto da quattro storie, raccontate dai quattro ragazzini protagonisti, personaggi in cui i bambini facilmente si identificheranno e che li condurranno ad affrontare, con gradualità, argomenti importanti e “nascosti”. Il grande libro è lo strumento magico che consente all’insegnante  di catturare l’attenzione dei bambini su argomenti non ancora collegati alla loro età ma ai vissuti quotidiani di alcuni di loro, grazie anche alle accattivanti illustrazioni di Giulia Ghigini.

La guida agli insegnanti, a cura di Mira Bianchi e Emanuela Colombo, raccoglie approfondimenti sull’argomento, suggerimenti per relazionarsi con bambini e genitori e spunti sull’attività da fare in classe, oltre alle istruzioni all’utilizzo del Kit.

In Italia il tumore del polmone rappresenta la prima causa di morte per cancro fra gli uomini e la sua incidenza continua ad aumentare  fra le donne. Nel 2008 in Italia sono stati diagnosticati 36.700 nuovi casi di tumore polmonare e 32.540 sono stati i decessi per questa malattia. Poiché il più importante fattore di rischio per il tumore del polmone è tuttora rappresentato dal fumo di sigaretta e poiché la vera prevenzione primaria per il tumore polmonare è rappresentata da un’efficace e capillare campagna contro il fumo di sigaretta, WALCE ha fortemente voluto la Campagna “Questa non me la fumo”, un’iniziativa che, attraverso supporti informativi e didattici, ma anche ludici e dai contenuti utili nelle esperienze vissute giornalmente dai ragazzi, si propone di informare e favorire attitudini volte a uno stile di vita sano e che pertanto si discosta dall’abitudine tabagica.

Questa non me la fumo | Speciale Scuole

Epidemiological studies show a steady increase in number of teens start smoking cigarettes. In Italy, 18% of young people start smoking before the age of 15, and 38% are adolescent and often begin between the age of 15 and 17.

WALCE (Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe), in collaboration with Carthusia Publishing, has initiated the project named “I’m not smoking that – Let’s try and see clearly through all the smoke”, an information and awareness campaign on damages of smoking and on the healthy lifestyles, aimed at 10 year-old pupils, consisting of an educational kit for the class.

Health, good nutrition and positive relationships are features that allow people to live a healthy lifestyle, and it is undeniable that smoking is the enemy of it. The Campaign has been made possible thanks to an educational grant of Incyte and it was sponsored by the Italian Institute of Health and the Piedmontese Institutions. The project was officially presented in Turin, and was created with the aim to help children to understand the world where they live and to learn more about the smoke of cigarette, one of the most current problem.

The battle against smoking is an opportunity to talk about issues close to young people and closely related to their daily lives: this campaign face the problem in a soft way, taking into account the sensitivity of every child, without creating any fears or alarmism, but suggesting the image of a healthy lifestyle.

As Prof Silvia Novello, the President of WALCE, said “We have chosen to address the campaign to 10 year-old pupils, because we think it is important to implement prevention and information measures on the damage caused by smoking and focusing the attention on children who live in their age of development, a phase during which learning is faster and more immediate. We would like to plant the seeds of good habits among children when they are still young and particularly receptive and able to set behaviours and approaches that then persist into adulthood”.

The school is a key reference point for children both from an educational point of view and in the orientating them to the most suitable lifestyles for their growth.

The text of the story consists of four tales, told by four kids with whom all the children could easily identified themselves. Inside the educational kit you could find:

• the big book for the class is the magic tool that helps teachers to capture children’s attention on issues not always connected to everyday experiences of their age but only with some of them.
• 24 notebooks: one per student with a dossier for parents to fill at home 
• a guide for the teacher 

The teacher guide collects elaborations on the issue, tips for relating with kids and their parents and some ideas on the activities to do in the classroom, as well as the instructions of using the Kit.

In Italy the Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and its incidence continues to increase among women. In 2008 in Italy were diagnosed 36,700 new cases of lung cancer and there were 32540 deaths for this disease. Because the most important risk factor for lung cancer is still represented by cigarette smoke and the only primary prevention of lung cancer is represented by an effective and comprehensive campaign against cigarette smoking, WALCE has strongly supported this Campaign, a campaign that through the educational information, and also entertaining and useful contents, aims to inform and promote attitudes to a healthy lifestyle and that therefore deviates the cigarette smoking habit.
